Keeping Your Home Safe and Warm This Winter

Winter is often the time when property problems appear, from burst pipes to damp patches, and these can quickly lead to unnecessary stress and expense. While landlords are responsible for maintaining their properties, tenants also play an important role in helping to keep things running smoothly.

To help you avoid common winter issues, we’ve put together some simple tips to protect your home and stay cosy this season:

  • Report minor leaks straight away. Small drips can quickly turn into big problems if left unchecked.
  • Keep the heating on low during cold spells. Frozen pipes can burst and cause major damage, so it’s best to maintain a steady, low temperature — especially if you’re away over the festive period.
  • Know where your stopcock is. In case of a burst pipe or leak, turning off the water supply quickly can prevent damage. Most stopcocks are found under the kitchen sink, but yours may be located elsewhere.
  • Manage condensation. Cold weather can make condensation worse and lead to mould. Keep rooms at an even temperature and let warm air circulate by leaving internal doors open where possible.
  • Block draughts. Use draught excluders under doors and letterboxes to keep heat in and reduce condensation.
  • Keep your home secure. If you’re going away for a few days, set lamps on timers so the property looks occupied.
  • Test your alarms regularly. Make sure smoke, carbon monoxide, and burglar alarms are all working properly.

What to Do in a Burst Pipe Emergency

If a pipe bursts, follow these steps immediately:

  1. Turn off the water supply at the mains. Use the main stopcock to shut off the flow.
  2. Drain the system. Run all cold taps until the water stops flowing.
  3. Contain any leaks. Use buckets or containers to catch leaking water.
  4. Contact us straight away. Report the incident as soon as possible so we can arrange emergency help.
