We have joined forces with Eden Project Communities in Wales to encourage customers to get to know their new neighbours by joining in with The Big Lunch.
The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual get together for neighbours, bringing them together for friendship, food and fun.
Every customer who buys or rents a house through either Peter Alan or PA Black will be given a special guide to organising a Big Lunch and some invitation cards to help them introduce themselves to their new neighbours.
Nicholas Barber, Head of Operations for Peter Alan, said: “We were surprised to read a recent Big Lunch report about how few people talk with their neighbours and the impact this can have on mental health and communities as a whole.
“All our branches are taking part in this brilliant partnership and we will be encouraging new home owners and tenants to get to know their new neighbours, right from the outset. What better way to do that than over a meal. Strong community spirit is a key element to creating a sense of place and great places to live, making it better for home owners and residents alike.”
The research published by The Big Lunch found that one in seven people had NEVER spoken to their neighbours, while 37% of people across Wales do not know their neighbours’ names. Despite that lack of neighbourly nattering, 77% recognise that communities are better if we know our neighbours and 59% would say ‘Yes’ if they were asked to join in with a Big Lunch.
Lowri Jenkins, Wales manager for The Big Lunch / Y Cinio Mawr, said: “More and more people are realising the importance of community and the benefit of knowing their neighbours. We know that when people come together good things happen and that is what The Big Lunch is all about.
“We are so happy to be working with Peter Alan estate agents and, through this great initiative, catching new neighbours and helping them make new connections. Loneliness and isolation are a huge problem across the UK, and I think this support from Peter Alan is a great way to create stronger communities, and even new friends.”
The Big Lunch, an idea from the Eden Project, made possible by The National Lottery, now attracts millions of people across the UK. Last year six million people took part in more than 68,500 Big Lunch events.
